Upcoming Changes to Disk Image Formats

Stacklet is changing the virtual disk formats used for Xen, XCP and KVM:

Xen 3/Xen 4; XVA
Since 2004 we have been using sparse images containing a single ext3 partition for images targeted for Xen PV. This has the advantage of being easy to loop mount and edit, as well as being highly compatible with the various generations of xen hypervisors, pygrub/pvgrub and higher-level control panels. We are retaining this format but transitioning to ext4 as the root filesystem of the domU image. Since the XCP templates are direct derivatives of the xen images this will also apply to our xva files. The recent builds of Fedora, Gentoo and Arch Linux have already made this transition without any apparent issues.

The downside is simply that users with old dom0 environments may be unable to loop mount an ext4 image or properly boot an ext4 image using pygrub.

KVM
In the full virtualization realm we have been using ext4 for a while now, embedded in a qcow2 disk image. The change here is that kvm images henceforth will be encoded as sparse raw disk images. This will achieve two things: better integration with various environments that use raw disk images exclusively or as a default. Also, it provides easier manipulation of an image with CLI tools. The downside is that qcow2 has features not available to raw disk images (eg snapshots), but this is mitigated by the fact that raw disk images can be trivially and rapidly converted to qcow2 using "qemu-img convert". [Conversions with qemu-img are bidirectional if you want to change a qcow2 to raw]. We should also mention that sparse images are best uncompressed with Gnu or BSD tar since many compression tools silently fail extracting sparse files.

SolusVM
None of the above changes impact SolusVM users since in the SolusVM Xen PV space the control panel creates the filesystem upon deployment (ext3) and there is still no KVM image format supported by SolusVM as of this writing, aside from iso.

Gentoo Linux 2012-07 Images and Templates for Xen, XCP, KVM, VMWare and SolusVM Xen PV

Final images of Gentoo Linux in a variety of formats are now available. This release has been named 2012-07 and does not correspond to an upstream release. We have x86_64 builds for Xen, KVM, VMWare, SolusVM Xen PV and XCP/XenServer.

Arch Linux 2012-07 Images and Templates for Xen, KVM, VMWare and SolusVM Xen PV

64-bit Arch Linux

Final images of Arch Linux in a variety of formats are now available. This release has been named 2012-07 and does not correspond to an upstream release. We have CLI builds for Xen, KVM, VMWare, SolusVM Xen PV and XCP/XenServer along with Xfce Desktop builds for Xen, KVM and VMWare only.

New test images of Gentoo and Arch Linux in a variety of formats are now available. These releases have been named 2012-07 and do not correspond to an upstream release. We have instead opted to track rolling distros on a bi-yearly schedule with January and July updates. These images are intended for testing purposes with a formal release in early July. Feedback is welcome.

Fedora 17 Production Release: Templates and Images Ready for Download Now

The Fedora project announced Fedora 17 yesterday. We have released lightweight and Xfce desktop images and templates for VMWare, QEMU/KVM, Xen and SolusVM (Xen PV) on x86 and x86_64 architectures. A lightweight x86_64 template for XenServer/Xen Cloud Platform (XCP) is also available.

Preview: Fedora 17, Beta Release for Xen, XCP, VMWare and KVM

In anticipation of next month's release of Fedora 17 we have created a limited set of images to help participate in the beta program and explore the new options and features. Currently there are desktop and CLI images for VMWare, KVM and Xen and a CLI XVA template for XCP/XenServer. These are all 64-bit versions.

WARNING: Some users will not be able to boot the xen and/or xva templates due to a bug in Fedora 17's glibc that appears to conflict with some CPUs when run under Xen PV. There are no known workarounds at this time.

UPDATE (2012-05-14): The latest glibc has been patched to fix the Xen domU issue mentioned above. The CLI Xen image and XVA template have been rebuilt. These will probably be the last builds prior to the production release on May 29th (which may be delayed again by upstream).

UPDATE (2012-05-29): Fedora 17 (Beefy Miracle) is gold. We are populating the repo now:
